Contributing

Currently Arch Hurd has a small number of developers, so, as you can imagine, it can be pretty tricky for us. If you consider the slowness of qemu and the fact that we have over 100 packages, well, it could be considered a miracle we've even got this far. However, never fear, keen Arch Hurd soon-to-be-contributor! We're not going away, so there is still plenty of stuff for you to help with.

Help Hurd

The Hurd project itself has many open issues and missing stuff. If you feel up for the task you may want to have a look at the Hurd contributing page for information on what needs to be done. Contributing to the Hurd project is very much encouraged.

Help Arch Hurd

Can't write code to save your life? Know nothing about the internal workings of the Hurd? Well, you could still be a package monkey. Even if you only take some of the current packages off our hands and maintain them rather than add new ones of your own, that's helpful enough. If you can write code, we're not actually doing much programming yet, but we will be at some point so your skills would still be valued.

Help even more

If you are participating in an Open Source project consider making it Hurd friendlier (if it isn't already). Check the Hurd porting guidelines for more information and help. If we have a package for it checking out the PKGBUILD can maybe help you find issues.

Documenters

Most of the wiki has been written by me (Barrucadu), and I'm not particularly good at writing documentation. If you are, and can volunteer time to improve on what's already here, proofread, or add new articles, you will be helping me with an admittedly rather grueling task.

Users and Testers

We need you people, too. Without users to tell us what's broken and what needs to be done, we're likely to miss things. Your favourite package is missing? Ask us to package it and its dependencies, perhaps we want it, too, but just haven't got around to it yet. Your nagging could be the impetus that spurs us into action and improves the OS.

Donations

Can't program, package, write documentation, or even merely use the OS? You pathe-, err, I mean, could help pay for the server costs! I'm currently hosting Arch Hurd on my dreamhost account with various other sites, which is paid for monthly out of my personal funds. No amount is too little! If I get $10.95 of donations in one month, that is the hosting for that month paid for. Additionally, I want to move Arch Hurd to a VPS at some point so we can have nicer things than are possible on shared hosting, which is, alas, quite a bit more expensive than shared hosting. The more donations, the more likely that is to happen.

Of course, the easiest way to get involved is to visit us on IRC, in #archhurd on irc.freenode.net, and talk to us. See you there!
